HONOR AIR PROJECT

HONOR AIR PROJECT
THERMAL BELT ROTARY CLUB
&
TRYON ROTARY CLUB
This project is dedicated to providing the opportunity for Polk County WWII veterans to tour the WWII memorial in Washington DC at not charge to the veteran.
Started as a community service project by a business man in Hendersonville NC and adopted the Asheville Rotary and now a joint project of the Thermal Belt and Tryon Rotary Clubs.
Veterans selected will be flown from Asheville airport to Regan airport in DC on a chartered US Air flight. A police escort will take the Veterans to the Memorial.
After lunch they visit the Korean, Vietnam, Lincoln, Iwo Jima War Memorials and on to Arlington National Cemetery, for the changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
All Veterans are aboard a motor coach back to Regan airport and returned to Asheville airport.
Approximately 600 veterans have taken part in this program to date in our county.
The Rotary Clubs have adopted this project to show our deep appreciation of the Veterans of WWII whose service and sacrifice preserved the freedoms that we all enjoy today.
The next flight is scheduled for NOVEMBER 1, 2008.
Transportation to Asheville airport will be provided by Special assistants who will also accompany the Veterans on the trip.
Rotarian Bill Andersen, enlisted in the Air Corps in October 1944. He passed the tests for pilot training, and Navigator training. By June of 1945, Germany had surrendered and Bill was sent to Hickham Field in Hawaii. He remained there until his discharge.
Please circle November 1st on your calendar to celebrate our Veterans and show them how much we appreciate them.
