Got Literacy?

Got Literacy?
Millions of People don’t, and their lives are profoundly diminished because of it.
At this moment you are exercising a skill that’s helped improve your income, your health, and your fundamental quality of life. In a matter of seconds, you’ve interpreted the symbols on this page and found their meaning: You know how to read!
But this page looks very different to millions of adults around the world. For those who never learned to read, the inability to interpret written words creates a barrier to a better life.

For many years, Rotary had championed literacy efforts.
As part of the Thermal Belt Rotary Club’s Literacy Empowers program, each second grader at SunnyView, Tryon, Saluda and Polk Central Elementary school received a very special book. The book Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure; written by Andrew J. Shoup was given out the week of February 4 to 12, by members of the Thermal Belt Rotary Club.

This book is the story of a young entrepreneur named Andy who with the help of a mysterious voice giving guidance and support, learns the value of truthfulness, fairness, goodwill and friendship that benefit everyone involved. These are the principles of the Rotary Four-Way Test: Of the things we think say and do: IS IT THE TRUTH? IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED? WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL AND BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? WILL IT BE BENEFICIAL TO ALL CONCERNED?
Thermal Belt Rotary Club’s aim is to help children value reading and books as a fun thing to do.
