June 22: --  MEETING HIGHLIGHTS:

·         President Pete said we need a three-year director for 2009-2010. He expressed appreciation to the Rosenbergs for hosting the installation dinner.

·         President Elect Ann Crandall presented a pin to Harry Burnett who is to be the Sgt. at Arms for next Rotary year.  Ann then said we have been approached by Steps to Hope for a construction job.  In the winter when the leaves have fallen, the view to their porch is open to unwanted viewing.  An overhang and  enclosure on two sides are needed.  Tryon Rotary has a man who can plan it.  It has to be done before fall.  The area is about 10' by 12'.  The walls would need to go up to the roof.  It is estimated that the job would take about four Saturdays.  The membership voted and approved the project.  Ann asked us to let her know who can help.

·         Jim Scott brought us up to date on the preparations for the Bike Tour.  We have about 38 bikers who have preregistered.  We need a couple more people to do registration and a couple more to help with parking.  There have been many good comments about the Bike Tour website.

Jim Scott introduced the town manager, Justin Hembree, who spoke to us about some of the problems encountered in that work.  He has had a number of responsible jobs and recently has done consulting work. (He said he has spoken at other Rotary clubs and ours is the only one he has seen that has a bar).  He said, "Seriously, this is the most difficult budget I have ever worked on.  Everyone has realized that we are in a recession.  We took the approach that we should maintain the current service levels that the town has always provided.  Our citizens receive very good service.  At the same time, we need to cut costs.  On the subject of annexation, there are some concerns about the statutes and how they are carried out, but towns have to grow."
