Program Agenda
August 24, 2009
THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM: Our former member Gloria Underwood will be our guest speaker. Her topic is the History of Polk County. Rueben Greenburg is responsible for refreshment.
August 10: Meeting Highlights:
The August 10 meeting was attended by 10 members at the Chamber of Commerce. Our speaker Jennifer Wychock spoke about organ, eye, and tissuee donation in the US. Of the patients waiting for organ donation, 80% is for kidneys. Other include heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, small intestine, whole eye, corneas, skin, bone, veins, tendons and ligaments, heart valves and associated cardiovascular tissues. There are waiting lists for different organs and tissues. She also spoke about the mechanism to coordinate between the donor's hospital and the receiving hospital. Teams of professionals are involved to carry out the process. Because of the different length of time each organ can survive, geographic distance between the hospitals is a factor in who will receive the donation. Different hospitals also have different waiting lists. A person can get on more than one waiting lists to increase the chance of receiving available donations. In South Carolina, the family of the donor can override the donor the wishes to donate, whereas the laws in North Carolina honors the wishes of the donor. Currently there are 80,000 on the waiting list for kidneys. Several success stories of receipients were told.
Sgt. At Arms Highlights: Ed Britton sold raffle tickets and collected happy dollars for Polio+, and sad, birthday dollars.
